How to Find the Right Influencers for Your Brand in India (Free and Paid Methods)

10 min readShare on WhatsApp, X, LinkedIn

Quick summary ↝Finding influencers isn't the hard part — Instagram is full of them. Finding the ones whose audience actually buys what you sell is. Here are seven methods, from completely free to fully managed, and the check to run before you spend a rupee.

How to Find the Right Influencers for Your Brand in India (Free and Paid Methods)

Most Indian brands start their first influencer campaign the same way: someone on the team scrolls Instagram, screenshots a few accounts with big follower counts, and sends DMs. A few weeks later the Reels go live, the likes look fine, and sales don't move. The problem wasn't influencer marketing. It was that the creators were found by follower count instead of by audience fit.

This guide covers seven ways to find creators — ordered from free and manual to paid and managed — and the short vetting routine that should sit between "found" and "hired" no matter which method you use.

First, decide what "right" means for your brand

Write these four lines down before you search. They turn an endless scroll into a filter:

  • Who buys from you. Age, city, language, and budget. A ₹399 kurti brand in Jaipur and a ₹4,000 skincare brand in Bengaluru need completely different creators, even inside the same "fashion and beauty" bucket.
  • The one action you want. Sales with a coupon code, app installs, store visits, or content you can run as ads. Each points to a different kind of creator — see micro vs macro influencers.
  • Your budget per creator. Nano creators (1K–10K followers) typically charge about ₹1,500–₹8,000 per Reel and micro creators (10K–50K) about ₹8,000–₹30,000 — the full breakdown is in influencer marketing cost in India.
  • Cash, barter, or both. If budget is tight, product-for-content deals can work — the barter collaboration guide covers when they do and don't.

Method 1: Search Instagram by hashtag and location (free)

Search the hashtags your customers actually use — not just #fashion, but #bangalorefoodie, #puneblogger, #desiskincare. Open the Recent tab rather than Top: Top is dominated by huge accounts, while Recent surfaces the smaller, active creators who post in your niche every week. Location tags work the same way for anything local — search your city or neighbourhood as a place and look at who is posting from there.

Hashtag and location searches are free — the cost is your time, which is why they suit a first test of 5–10 creators.

Method 2: Start with people who already like you (free)

Your best creators are often already following you, tagging you, or buying from you. Check your tagged posts, your followers sorted by engagement, and your order list for customers with an active Instagram or YouTube presence. A creator who genuinely uses your product doesn't need a script to sound convincing — and many will accept a lower fee because they already believe in it.

Method 3: Look at who your competitors work with (free)

Open a competitor's profile, go to their tagged posts, and look for "Paid partnership" labels. That's a list of creators who have already proved they'll work with a brand in your category. Don't just copy it — look for creators who posted once and not again. Sometimes that means the campaign didn't perform; sometimes it means the creator is open to a better offer.

Method 4: Google and YouTube search (free)

For YouTube, search your product category with a city or language ("skincare routine Tamil", "budget phone review Hindi") and filter by upload date to find channels that are active now. For Instagram, a Google search like site:instagram.com "food blogger" Hyderabad surfaces accounts whose bios match — clumsy, but it finds creators that hashtags miss.

Method 5: An influencer marketplace (free to search, pay per hire)

Manual searching gets you a list of handles. It doesn't tell you their rates, whether they're available, or whether they'll actually reply. A marketplace does. On InfluencerMetric's discover page you can filter creators by niche, platform and city, see what they charge up front, and pay through escrow so money is only released once you approve the content. Browsing by niche and city is also possible directly — for example food creators in Bengaluru or beauty creators in Mumbai.

Method 6: Discovery software (paid subscription)

Enterprise tools index millions of accounts and let you filter by audience demographics. They're powerful for brands running dozens of campaigns a year, but the subscription usually costs more than a small brand's entire first campaign — and you still have to negotiate and pay every creator yourself. Our comparison of influencer platforms in India covers the trade-offs.

Method 7: An agency (fully managed)

An agency finds, briefs, negotiates and reports for you. That's worth paying for when you have a big budget and no one in-house to run it. For budgets under a few lakh, the agency margin often buys you fewer creators than doing it yourself would — see agency vs marketplace.

The 5-minute vetting check (do this for every creator)

Whichever method you used, run these checks before sending money:

  1. Engagement rate. Average likes plus comments on the last 12 posts, divided by followers. Rough benchmarks: nano around 4%, micro around 2.5%, mid-tier around 2%. Use the free engagement rate calculator.
  2. Comment quality. Real comments reference the content. Walls of "nice 🔥" from random accounts are a warning sign.
  3. Audience location. A creator with a mostly overseas audience can't sell a Pune-only delivery service. Ask for an Insights screenshot showing top cities.
  4. Follower spikes. A jump of thousands of followers in a day with no viral post usually means bought followers. The audience quality checker and how to check fake followers walk through it.
  5. Past brand work. Look at their earlier sponsored posts. Did those get similar engagement to their normal posts, or did the audience tune out?

The outreach message that gets replies

"Hi [name] — we're [brand], a [one-line description]. We liked your [specific Reel] because [specific reason]. We'd like to pay you for [deliverable, e.g. one Reel + 3 stories] in [month]. Our budget is around ₹[amount] — does that work for you, or what would you normally charge?"

Naming a specific post proves you're not mass-messaging, and naming a budget saves both sides a week of back-and-forth. Once they agree, send a proper brief — here's the template.

Skip the DM hunt. Filter creators by niche, city and price, see rates before you message, and pay into escrow that's released only when you approve the content.

FAQ

How do I find influencers for my brand for free?

Search Instagram hashtags and location tags using the Recent tab, check who already tags your brand, look at competitors' "Paid partnership" posts, and use Google searches like site:instagram.com plus your niche and city. Marketplaces such as InfluencerMetric are also free to browse — you only pay when you hire.

How many followers should an influencer have for a small brand?

For most small Indian brands, nano (1K–10K) and micro (10K–50K) creators give the best return: they cost less, have higher engagement, and their audience trusts their recommendations. Start with 5–10 of them rather than one bigger account.

How can I tell if an influencer's followers are fake?

Check engagement rate against tier benchmarks, read the comments, ask for an Insights screenshot of audience cities, and look for sudden follower spikes with no viral post behind them.

Should I find influencers in my own city?

If you sell locally — a restaurant, salon, gym or city-limited delivery — yes, a local audience matters more than size. If you ship across India, niche fit matters more than city, and tier-2 creators often cost less for similar results (see tier-2 and tier-3 creators).
