Why Shorts pay less than long-form

A long-form video carries its own ads, and the creator receives 55% of that revenue. Shorts have no ads inside the video: ads run between Shorts in the feed, the money is pooled across every eligible creator, part of it covers music licensing, and the creator keeps 45% of their slice.

The result, in AIR Media-Tech's 2026 data from 274 channels, is a Shorts RPM of 3 to 14% of long-form RPM in most niches. Use the long-form calculator to compare the two for your niche.

What changes on 1 February 2027?

YouTube's Shorts monetisation policy says that from 1 February 2027, to earn a share of Shorts ad revenue and YouTube Premium revenue for any month, a channel needs at least 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. That is about 34 lakh views a month. Below it, the channel earns nothing from the Shorts pool that month.

How do I get monetised with Shorts?

Are Shorts worth making if they pay so little?
